Every business email you send should have a clear goal. Whether it’s to advertise a new product, inform your audience of company news or updates, promote an event or sale, or remind your audience of important deadlines or actions they need to take, each message should have a subject line that helps your readers understand the intent behind it.
Achieving the perfect subject line can feel like a daunting task. With the right tips and tricks, however, you can create eye-catching, click-worthy emails that get opened and read.
In order to help you craft subject lines that resonate with your audience, we’ve rounded up some of our favorite examples from top brands that have taken the guesswork out of what works and what doesn’t. These examples showcase how the best subject lines can create a sense of urgency, a promise of transformation or something else that will convince your reader to open and engage with your email.
1. Use an Emoji
Emojis are a surefire way to get your audience’s attention and increase the likelihood that they will open and read your email. EF Tours uses a playful use of the “smoldering red lips” emoji in their subject line to add a fun element to an otherwise standard email and create a feeling of intrigue that draws the viewer in.
2. Use a Quotation
A quotation in your subject line can be a great way to generate curiosity and draw the reader into your email. Use a popular quote that will appeal to your audience, or a stat or fact about your company that is interesting and relevant to your reader. Then, make sure to keep the quote short so that your subject line doesn’t feel cluttered or overly long.
3. Share a Personal Story
Your subscribers trust you to provide them with valuable information and insights. Authenticity is key, but so is knowing what your audience wants and needs. When you can offer a solution to one of their pain points or address their concerns in your content, you will see a significant boost in your open rates. Using testimonials from past clients or sharing real results that your audience can relate to will give your email subject line a more personal and trustworthy tone.
4. Use Onomatopoeia
Onomatopoeia, or words that imitate sounds, can be an effective and creative way to catch the eye of your audience. These types of words are especially effective when they sound outlandish or humorous, which is why they work well in this witty and engaging subject line from Wish.
5. Use Contextualization
Adding context to your subject line can dramatically increase relevance and, as a result, open rates. Try segmenting your email list based on their industry or job role, or even their location, and creating tailored, highly relevant subject lines that will speak directly to them. For example, if your business is in their city and they have visited you in the past, using a subject line like “Fancy a coffee First_Name?” can be a great way to initiate engagement.
